The 2021 Mazda CX-5: A Sporty Compact Crossover Choice for Any Driver

Few compact crossovers, if any, combine SUV-like practicality and passenger-car driving dynamics with a touch of sportiness like the Mazda CX-5. Unsurprisingly, the CX-5 has been a huge hit with drivers in the Syracuse area. Drivers Village-area customers can choose from the CX-5's seven trim levels, which are the Sport, Touring, Carbon Edition, Carbon Edition Turbo, Grand Touring, Grand Touring Reserve, and Signature.

The base engine on the latest Mazda CX-5 is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, which puts out 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque and tied to a six-speed automatic transmission with a manual shifter and Sport mode. So, the powertrain is primed for racing-style acceleration and driving performance. In addition, Cicero, NY shoppers can choose the turbocharged version of the 2.5-liter, which is exclusive to the aptly named Carbon Edition Turbo and can produce up to 250 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque if fed with premium fuel. With its standard front-wheel drivetrain, the CX-5 has a decent fuel-economy peak, which is estimated at 25 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway. There's the option of all-wheel drive, however, to maximize road grip.

The Mazda CX-5 is a five-seater, with two rows of cloth-trimmed seats and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The rear seats can be folded down to expand cargo space into the cabin. At the Touring trim level, the cloth seat trim is replaced with synthetic leather, and the front ones gain heating ability. For exclusive red leather upholstery-which enhances the racing-style interior-go with a Carbon Edition model; the Grand Touring and higher also gain leather seats. Clay, NY shoppers should go with the "Reserve" variant of the Grand Touring if they want heating on the rear seats and steering wheel, and front-seat cooling. Only the top-level Signature gets Nappa leather upholstery and genuine wood interior trim to maximize a luxurious aura.

Comfort and Convenience

Remote keyless entry with push-button engine start makes Mazda CX-5 access and engine starting very easy. For infotainment, this compact crossover combines a four-speaker AM/FM stereo system with HD Radio, Bluetooth, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration, a Wi-Fi hotspot, a pair of USB ports and an audio jack for hooking up mobile devices, hands-free text messaging, voice command technology, and a large 10.25-inch touchscreen with a rotary controller as a secondary way to execute functions. Also standard is Mazda Connected Services for remote connectivity to the vehicle with functions such as vehicle locator, remote start/stop, and door locking and unlocking.

Dual-zone automatic climate control, two additional speakers, and access upgrade with proximity keyless entry appear at the Touring trim level. Comfort and convenience get a major boost at the Grand Touring trim level, which has enhancements such as a trial subscription to SiriusXM Radio, auto-dimming ability and a garage-door opener on the rearview mirror, a 10-speaker Bose stereo system, a moonroof, paddle shifters for the transmission, and a power liftgate. (The Grand Touring Reserve adds a head-up display.) A navigation system is exclusive to the Signature model.

The Mazda CX-5 has a horde of driver-assistance features, which consist of a rearview camera, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, forward collision warning with forward automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, lane keep-assist, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. Six airbags provide restraint and cushioning if a crash occurs, and it is accompanied by an automatic emergency notification system. On the top-level Signature, reverse automatic emergency braking joins forward automatic emergency braking, the rearview camera is replaced by a 360-degree camera system with front and rear parking sensors, and traffic sign recognition and driver attention monitoring appear for maximizing driver assistance.
